Child Rearing Strategies For The Anxious Parent

Parenting is a difficult job but there is good reason for you to be optimistic. Good advice is more readily available than ever. You can try some new strategies and learn from the experiences of others. The tips you will find in this article have stood the test of time, and will give you the feeling that you are not alone in facing those parenting challenges.

Parenting requires balance! Find a good balance between punishment and reward. You don't want to push your children too hard, but at the same time you don't want to be too easy on them. You need to find the right balance between the two, so that your children can achieve much without cracking under the pressure!

Get to know your child's friends, and introduce yourself to their parents. It is important to know what type of people and influences your child is being exposed to outside of the home. Embrace friendships that involve new cultures, but discourage friendships that are of an overly-negative nature, or that do not fit with your own ideology.

Stand your ground when it comes to your child's bedtime. If it's past their bedtime and they're begging you for just one more TV show or book, stand your ground. An hour less sleep per night reduces a child's ability to function the next day, affecting their concentration at school. Teenagers need eight to nine hours of sleep per night, whereas younger school-age children should get a minimum of ten to twelve hours.

Remember that you were a kid once and that it's never easy trying to adjust to new things like a different school, a new home, etc, so it's always important that you're supportive if your child seems hesitant to adjust. Good parents are supportive parents willing to communicate. Parents who ignore and/or force the adjustment are in danger of losing their child's respect.

Take care not to pass your fears on to your children. Adults are irrationally afraid of many things in life; rather than teaching your child to be afraid too, give them what they need to handle a wide variety of situations. For example, give them rules and expectations for how to behave if another adult approaches them and you aren't around. Allow them to feel in control and confident.

Inspire confidence in your children. It is definitely necessary to correct your children when they are wrong. Please do not forget to compliment them when they do something good. One of the greatest things you can say to your child is "I am so proud of you." They also need to hear "I love you."

Demonstrate to your kids how much good academic performance means you to by displaying their schoolwork in a prominent location, such as the refrigerator or another spot. This sends the message that you value your children's educations, and may encourage them to strive for the positive reinforcement of seeing their work proudly displayed.

Being consistent with your children is absolutely necessary. If you say you will do something, then you must do it. Failing to hold up your end of the deal, even if it is dishing out a punishment, will only teach your children that you don't follow through, or that they can talk their way out of something.

If you are becoming frustrated as a new parent, put your baby in a safe place and walk away. The crib or pack and play can serve well for this purpose. Take some time to breathe and calm down, so that you don't unintentionally harm your child. You will thank yourself for this when your baby remains safe.

Do not be in a hurry to introduce solid foods to your baby. It is now recommended that this is not done before the age of six months. Studies show children develop food allergies if solid food is introduced too soon. If your baby is unable to hold up their head at six months, wait to feed them solid food, until they can hold it up on their own.

A lot of parents have a habit of not practicing what they preach. They'll insist that children do as they say and not as they do, but you should not do anything that you wouldn't allow your child to do. Yes, this even means things like smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. Sure, you're an adult. But you're also a parent of an impressionable kid!

Competitive sports are actually good for a child, despite what some trends are suggesting. Making sure that your children are involved in some type of competitive sport will ensure that they know how to compete and that they understand that trying hard and doing your best will be rewarded in multiple ways.

It is important to make lasting memories with your children. You want your children to be able to look back at their childhood and have fond memories. Making gingerbread men, playing baseball in the backyard or doing art and craft projects together is a great way to build lasting memories.

As you can see, there are a lot of things to keep in mind while parenting to ensure your children have the best future they can. Apply these tips in your child's life so that they can grow to have the best opportunities in their future lives as you can give them.
